This is something you will want to avoid if you've been working hard at the gym trying to lose fat, build muscle and maintain a healthy physique.Due to the fact you're asleep for 6-8 hours and would normally have eaten 3-4 hours before sleeping, it can mean you're fasting for upto 12 hours a day, aiding the muscle breakdown every night. The best way to avoid this muscle breakdown is to ensure you're getting enough protein. Throughout the day you will want to get protein from a variety of sources, like meat, eggs, dairy and soy, for example. If you're working out heavily it may also be worth having one or two protein shakes aswell, taking one in the morning and one immeadiately after your workout. You will usually want fast-acting protein like whey throughout the day, which releases the amino acids your body needs rapidly. Before bed however, you would be looking for a slower-acting protein. The best type of protein for this is casein, which can be found in both cottage cheese and milk (amongst other things). You Will Need - Half a Cup of Low-Fat Cottage Cheese
- 2 Slices of Wholemeal Bread
- 3-4 Slices of Wafer-Thin Turkey Ham
- A Squirt of Tomato Ketchup
- One Glass of Skimmed Milk
To Make - Pre-heat a grill to a medium/high heat.
- Spread the cottage cheese onto one of the slices of bread and the ketchup on the other.
- Place the slices of turkey ham on top of the cottage cheese.
- Place the bread with ketchup onto the the ham, making a sandwich.
- Place the sandwich under the grill until lightly browned, then turn over to grill the other side.
- Remove the toastie from the grill, turn off the heat and eat. Wash it down with the glass of milk for extra protein!
