Use the BMI Calculator below to find out your Body Mass Index, which is a number calculated from your weight and height.
Although it does not directly measure body fat, the Body Mass Index is considered an accurate body fat measurement and can give you a good idea of your general health.
How is my Body Mass Index calculated?
Your Body Mass Index is calculated by dividing your weight in pounds by your height in inches squared and then multiplying that number by 703. The formula is:
weight / [height (in inches)]2 x 703
Example:
John is 5'11" and weighs 185 pounds. The formula is completed as follows:
* John's height in inches is 71".
* He calculates that 71" squared (71 x 71) = 5,041.
* Next, he divides his weight, 185 by 5,041.
* Then multiplies this number, which is 0.0366991 by 703
* The resulting number, which is rounded up to 25.80, is John's Body Mass Index.
What does the Body Mass Index number mean?
Your Body Mass Index will place you in one of the following categories:
* Those below 18.5 are considered underweight.
* Those between 18.5 and 24.9 are considered normal weight.
* Those between 25.0 and 29.9 are considered overweight
* Those of 30.0 and above are considered obese.
In addition to Body Mass Index, those who have a waist size of more than 40 inches for men, or 35 inches for women, have a higher risk for obesity-related health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and heart disease.
